Pacific Crest Trail – Day 73 (2 miles)
I wanted to sleep in but thought better of it as I was sleeping on the trail and was in anyone who came pasts way.
I got up quickly and left. I only had a couple of miles to get to the highway.
I went to Callahan’s Lodge to pick up a couple of packages. The front desk was not open so I waited. Eventually, the manager showed up and I collected my boxes.
I then went off to town. Being 7 am it took a while to hitch onto the highway, but I got a ride in the end.
First stop was breakfast and then I would spend the rest of the day organising 16 days of resupply to post ahead of myself. I would send them to ski lodges and resorts and will mean that I hardly have to get off the trail for the rest of the hike.
Collecting so much food was painful and the least enjoyable part of Thru Hiking, but after a few hours the boxes were in the mail and it was over.
I then headed to the hostel to eat some more and relax. And that is what I did for the rest of the day.
I did discover two things.
1) That the temperature of the next 3 days would be about 114 degrees (45C) and way too hot for my liking!
2) There are two fires ahead of me. Both growing and have shut down the PCT. They also both happen to be in my two favourite spots in the state, Mt Jefferson and Eagle Creek.
A good nights sleep and I’ll be hitting Oregon hard. Although I’m not looking forward to the incredible amount of mosquitos I keep hearing about.
