Continental Divide Trail – Day 23 (31 miles)
Ok, so I got lazy and did not write my journal for the next couple of days. On top of that, trail life seems to start blurring days together. It is so interesting to have a memory so entrenched into my head but cannot always pinpoint where or when it was. Is this just me?
Today was a good but not overly consequential day. I continued to climb up into the high mountains and towards Colorado.
Last night I was looking at my maps and picked out a cross country route that linked up about 5 miles of meadows before rejoining the CDT. Wandering through these was simply amazing. It was also fun trying to push through some dense shrubs between the open areas. Oh, and I saw my first bear of the trip! It was maybe a year old cub and I could not see its mother around.
The next segment was linking up grassy ridges and watching the cows run away scared as they saw me coming. But by mid afternoon I was in dense forest of Aspen and Pine, with flowing mountain streams. The forest was magical and I felt like I might see another bear at any minute.
I set up camp early to stick with my slowing down effort. I settled down on some pine duff and drifted off to sleep fairly quickly.
