Winter Appalachian Trail – Day 11 (8 miles)
I’ll keep it short today.
I descended out of the Smokies and the weather was fantastic again.
In the morning I thought that I lost my wallet. I looked everywhere for it to no avail and my heart was thumping in panic. Just after I gave up on it, I got my food bag off the bear hang from outside and there it was. I have never put my wallet in my food bag before but I’m glad I did not leave it somewhere.
When I got down to I40 I met up with Red Hat, a local trail angel that I met at Fontana Dam, and who offered me a bed for the night. She is amazing. Cooked me dinner and refused to let me help. Everytime I tried she ordered me back to the couch to relax.
Clean clothes and a shower are ever so pleasant! I’m ready to be back on trail tomorrow after this Nero.
P.S. The accumulation of snow up north is a concern for completing the Year Triple Crown. I really needed a low snow year on both the AT and PCT to allow the miles per day required. I will continue on but, unfortunately, my plans might need to be revised.
